What we are doing:
Tuscaloosa REACTS is a one-day conference that aims to educate community stakeholders about the causes and effects of childhood trauma. This is an opportunity for area leaders, service providers and community members to increase awareness, promote learning, identify resources and network. Keynote speakers include Dr. Glenn Saxe, a nationally recognized expert on community trauma intervention, and Mayor Walt Maddox. In addition, many Tuscaloosa-area providers will share their experiences and expertise in addressing the needs of our children.
Who we are:
The Tuscaloosa County Juvenile Justice Work Group is comprised of community leaders, service providers and University of Alabama faculty and researchers who work together to improve community safety by better addressing the needs of at-risk children. Our goals are to identify gaps in knowledge and services and develop strategies to close those gaps in order to provide research-supported interventions for youth who are involved or who may become involved with the juvenile justice system.

Keynote Speaker — Dr. Glenn N. Saxe
Trauma can have devastating consequences on a child’s life—consequences that may or may not be obvious to parents, teachers, or other caregivers. In his work, Dr. Glenn Saxe tries to understand the impact of traumatic events on children and their families, and then help them to recover. He created Trauma Systems Therapy to teach other mental healthcare professionals how to diagnose and treat children following traumatic events. The program addresses a child’s emotional needs and social environment, and he is proud to see it being used to successfully treat children throughout the country and around the world.
